About Kate

In A Few Words

Kate Young is an abstract artist based in Guelph, Ontario, working primarily in acrylic and mixed media. Through vibrant colour, layered texture, and intuitive mark-making, she creates paintings inspired by nature, sensory experience, and the subtle patterns that connect us to the world around us.

The Process

A self-taught artist, Kate has developed her practice over more than a decade through exploration, experimentation, and a deep curiosity about colour and material. Working primarily with palette knives, scrapers, and layered acrylic mediums, she builds surfaces that reveal movement, depth, and unexpected relationships between colours and forms.

Rather than beginning with a fixed image or plan, each painting evolves through a process of observation and response. Colours, textures, and compositional rhythms emerge gradually, guided by intuition and a willingness to follow what unfolds on the canvas.

The Inspiration

Inspiration often begins with everyday encounters—a shifting landscape, a fleeting colour combination, organic patterns in nature, or moments of quiet reflection.

Alongside her artistic practice, Kate has worked as a Registered Dietitian for more than a decade. Her interest in intuition, perception, and the ways we experience the world through our bodies subtly informs her approach to painting. Through abstraction, she explores colour and texture as a sensory experience, creating work that invites curiosity, connection, and personal interpretation.
